February 2006 The final synthesis report on Prairie Water Strategies - Innovations and Challenges in Strategic and Coordinated Action at the Provincial Level has been posted. Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba have each articulated a water resources management strategy to help address challenges within their provincial jurisdiction. Each jurisdiction is currently grappling with the inherent challenges of this process including leadership, planning, implementation, monitoring, learning and adapting, multi-level coordination and participation. This synthesis report provides an in-depth study of the common challenges and innovations in these aspects of water management and the findings constitute a pragmatic toolbox.
December 2005 The International Joint Commission (IJC) released a on strengthening capacities in watersheds to prevent and resolve transboundary disputes. The report “A Discussion Paper on the International Watersheds Initiative” proposes that the IJC's boards in three watersheds - the St. Croix River (Maine and New Brunswick), the Red River (Minnesota, Manitoba and North Dakota) and the Rainy River, including the Rainy and Namakan lakes (Ontario and Minnesota) - be the testing grounds for the development of the IJC's Watersheds Initiative. Creating local solution-building capabilities will represent a significant investment in the management of the shared and precious water resources of Canada and the United States. The IJC looks forward to discussing these ideas and to moving forward on this initiative with the two federal governments.
December 2005 Videos for presentations to the Prairie Water Policy Symposium: “From Cumulative Threats to Integrated Responses” are now posted. The Symposium was hosted September 22-23, 2005 in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada by the International Institute for Sustainable Development. The Symposium reviewed biophysical stresses on the prairies; recognized innovations and challenges in water management strategies; examined best practices and new tools for water resources management; and identified critical issues in managing the transition to integrated water resources management.
November 2005 In recent years, there is greater appreciation of the need to involve the society in the process of decision-making and increasing their resilience against flood hazards. However, flood management has often been dealt with through engineering interventions without wider consultations and without involving communities in the decision-making. It is with this background that the advocacy paper on Social Aspects of Integrated Flood Management is being developed. This paper by the WMO and Global Water Partnership, Associated Programme on Flood Management, will address social and cultural factors that influence the flood management decisions and the way society can participate in flood management planning and reduce its vulnerability adopting community level approach at various stages of risk management cycle.

The report is an introduction to the science of climate change summarizing our understanding of the issue and the Canadian response. The report also examines the many possible impacts that a warmer climate will have on Canada and the World.

October 2005 Review of Implementation Progress of Water for Life 2004/2005. The Alberta Water Council was appointed in May 2004 to provide direction and advice to the government, stakeholders and the public around the province's Water for Life strategy. The Alberta Water Council undertook its own independent review of the water strategy’s first year of implementation. In its report, the Council applauds a strong first year and presents a number of recommendations for the Alberta Government in 2006.
September 2005: A Preliminary Survey of Pharmaceuticals and Endocrine Disrupting Compounds in Treated Municipal Wastewaters and Receiving Rivers of Alberta. Alberta Environment. Results of this study indicate that many of the 105 compounds that were tested for occur with some regularity in wastewater effluents and can be detected in the associated receiving waters.

November 30 2004 The Fraser Basin Council released The State of the Fraser Basin Report: Sustainability Snapshot 2. The report examines 17 key sustainability issues and profiles issues of concern in each of the fiver Fraser Basin regions.

The report examines the implications of climate change on the Okanagan’s water resources.
