Waterloo Chapter
Description
The Waterloo SYP Chapter has been active since September 2001. The Chapter typically
meets every three weeks at a local establishment in order to get together, plan
and discuss activities. The emphasis of the Waterloo Chapter is to provide a volunteer-based
organization to promote awareness of water related issues to U of W and the surrounding
community, as well as provide networking opportunities between students, young professionals
and established professionals. In addition, the Waterloo Chapter fosters career
development through providing opportunities to develop soft skills, such as event
planning, communication, and public relations, as well as providing opportunities
to network with a broader range of students in a variety of disciplines. The Waterloo
chapter holds a core membership of five to ten individuals throughout the year,
with a larger, looser membership of individuals attending chapter-sponsored events
or meetings, or providing additional help.
The highlights of the 2004-05 academic year included organization of a seminar presentation
of River Restoration, delivered by Professor Stephen Murphy of the University of
Waterloo Department of Environment and Resource Studies, on January 18, 2005. On
March 9, 2005, the U of W chapter in partnership with the Ontario Branch organized
the 4th annual Student-Industry Networking Evening. This event featured a panel
discussion, on urban growth and water supply management in groundwater recharge
areas, led by three experts in the topic. The focus was on the Waterloo Moraine,
located close to the University of Waterloo.
