Calgary Chapter

Description

The Calgary Chapter was launched in January 2006. The launch coincided with our first chapter event which was held at University of Calgary. A guest speaker from Alberta Environment gave an interactive talk on the changing role of water managers in Alberta and opportunities for students and young professionals in water related fields in the province.

The core organizational committee is now comprised of students and young professionals that collaborate on a volunteer basis to organize events which create opportunities for students and young professionals to network. Our events have been well attended and we continue to strive to bring in speakers that provide relevant information regarding current water issues. Our membership and event attendees include individuals from a wide range of disciplines from biologists, hydrogeologists, engineers, and planners. The core team meets approximately once a month during the fall, winter and spring months in order to network and plan events.

A summary of 2006 events/activities: Bow River Clean Up, a showing of the Bow River Float film, a review of the Water in the West Senate Report, an academic speaker event at UofC, the Youth Environmental Summit in Kananaskis, as well as leisure activities.

Summary of 2007 events/activities: 1 year anniversary Pub Night (January), Student/Professional Mixer (March), Bow River Clean-Up (May), “What you can do with your degree night” (October).

Summary of 2008 events/activities: 2 year anniversary Pub Night (January), Networking breakfast at the CWRA Alberta Branch conference (April).

The Calgary chapter is always looking for new members and new event ideas. Please contact the chapter leader if you are interested in getting involved.
