How Does Project WET Work?
Project WET is a program and a network of coordinators and water educators.
The delivery network consists of provincial/territorial program sponsors, coordinators
and facilitators located throughout their respective provinces/territories. Coordinators
train facilitators who in turn conduct informative, interactive and fun workshops
for classroom teachers, agency educators, resource managers and others. Educators
who participate in a six-hour Project WET workshop receive training on incorporating
water science principles into their curriculum and receive the Project WET Curriculum
and Activity Guide.
The Project WET Guide
The Project WET Curriculum and Activity Guide is a collection of over 90 broad-based
water resource activities that are hands-on, easy to use and fun. The Project WET
Guide is a balanced supplementary resource that enhances water education learning
in all subject and skill areas. It covers many water related topics including atmospheric,
surface and ground water, chemistry, water history, watersheds, wetlands, aquatic
wildlife, water quality, water use, water management, water economics, water conservation
and water stewardship. Guide activities promote critical thinking and problem solving
skills and help young people gain the knowledge, skill and experience needed to
make informed decisions regarding water resource management.
Developed, field-tested and reviewed by over 600 educators and resource managers
working with 34,000 students, the Project WET Curriculum & Activity Guide is
"educator friendly." Educators may easily organize activities into units
of study or pick and choose their individual favourites. More importantly,
the activities focus on teaching students how to think, not what to think.
Project WET activities are designed to satisfy the goals of educational programs
by complementing existing curricula rather than displacing or adding more concepts.
Project WET activities provide many opportunities to address curriculum objectives
and educational standards. These interdisciplinary activities designed for
students in grades K to 12 and beyond are ideal for use in formal and informal education settings.
The Project WET Curriculum and Activity Guide was designed:
- To provide material that represents the thoughts, needs, and concerns of a vast
cross section of grassroots educators and resource managers and is relevant and
meaningful to young people.
- To accommodate diverse learning styles with activities that are practical,
thought provoking and engaging.
- To address water from the widest possible angle with Project WET modules and existing
regional water education programs bringing local issues into sharper focus.
- To provide educators with a large selection of creative teaching strategies.
- To promote the tenet of "water for all water users."
- To generate enthusiasm for further, more in depth study of topics introduced through
the activities.
