SYP Chapters

Introductory Networking Event

Where and when did the event happen?
Winnipeg on the 29th of Sept. 2005

What happened?
Introductory networking event. Provided a networking opportunity for students and professionals.

How many people attended?
55 people attended.

We are interested in holding such an event, how much would it cost?
The total cost came to $850 and that covered room rental, food, taxes, and service charges. Professionals were charged $15 and students entered for free, the remained was paid by the Manitoba Chapter.

How long did the organizing take?
The 'Profiles Committee' of the Manitoba CWRA branch organized the event. There were 5 of us. We probably had 3 breakfast meetings. One person needed to get the movies; while 1 person organized the menu, room bookings etc. Advertisement for the event included posters and emails to students in the faculty of engineering, as well as short presentations to individual classes in Civil Engineering. The timing of the event was at the beginning of the school year before students got too busy. The event was also advertised using the CWRA Manitoba branch mailing list, and all members of the board of directors were encouraged to attend.

What were the major challenges you faced?
The cost was high since the event was held on campus and we were not an official student group. Now that we've become an official student group the same event would be at least $250 cheaper. This was a very successful event - I'm not sure that we would've been able to start a SYP chapter without it. The thing that made it so successful was that it was very well supported by the Manitoba Branch. As I've mentioned, one of the subcommittees organized it; I just happened to be a student on that committee.

Was it successful? And would you recommend it?

Free food and a free drink didn't hurt either!
