Wetland Policy and Mitigation: New Opportunities for Wetland Conservation
The Saskatchewan Branch in partnership with Ducks Unlimited Canada hosted a Wetland Mitigation Workshop on May 10-11, 2005 in Saskatoon Saskatchewan. The workshop was designed to provide information from a variety of sources as a means of facilitating discussion on wetland protection and restoration in Saskatchewan. The workshop opened with an overview and general discussions on wetlands – what they are and how they function. The workshop also provided perspectives from the three Prairie Provinces (Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba) on approaches to wetland conservation along with national perspectives from Environment Canada and Fisheries and Oceans. The workshop also offered an opportunity to hear about approaches adopted by the United States regarding wetland legislation and policies.
In addition, Patricia Farnese from the Centre for Studies in Agriculture, Law and the Environment was invited to participate in the workshop and provide a summary synthesis of the workshop and some discourse on future directions for Canadian wetland policy. The following article is her synopsis: Future Directions for Canadian Wetland Policy (22 KB PDF)
