As the 10th largest body of freshwater in the world, Lake Winnipeg has received significant attention over the past few years due to an increasing concern over nutrient loading in the lake. Reports of increased frequency, duration and intensity of algal blooms have raised concern for both the lakes ecological and economic interests. Water from four provinces and two states drains into Lake Winnipeg, making it the second largest watershed in Canada. Managing nutrients within the lake’s watershed is an important and complex challenge.

The Manitoba Branch of the Canadian Water Resources Association hosted a two-day forum titled "Managing Nutrients in the Lake Winnipeg Watershed.". The objectives of the Forum were

  • To highlight some of the important water quality and nutrient management issues in Manitoba and neighboring jurisdictions.
  • To discuss the implication of recent legislation being developed for managing nutrients in Manitoba, and
  • To provide a forum for water resources professionals to network and discuss their experiences in these areas.

This forum featured presentations and discussion on various nutrient management issues within the Lake Winnipeg Watershed and are posted below.
