This year, CWRA-AB is planning to offer half day field trips or a short course to interested delegates on the morning of April 9th, 2008 following the conference. The cost to attend a field trip or short course is $50. Breakfast and lunch, as well as any transportation costs or printed materials – are covered by this fee.
To attend the field trip, sign up on the online registration system when registering for the conference. In early April, conference delegates who have expressed an interest in the field trips and short course will be contacted by e-mail and surveyed to finalize necessary details.
Preliminary planning is underway to offer the following field trips and short course:
Ghost Reservoir and Dam – proposed field trip
Ghost Reservoir is an impoundment of the Bow River located on the edge of the foothills approximately 45 km west of Calgary. The reservoir and dam are named for the Ghost River, which flows into the east end of the reservoir.
The proposed field trip takes participants from the hotel to the dam for a tour of the water and hydro structures, control room, and the reservoir. Safety equipment will be provided to participants.
Innovative Stormwater Management Projects – proposed field trip
A tour of a variety of wetpond and wetland sites in Calgary: in construction, recently built and well established. Particular stress will be placed on stormwater quality retrofit examples. A preliminary list of sites to be visited includes the 68th Street SE Pond & Wetlands, the Forestlawn Creek Realignment, the Shepard Wetlands, the Fish Creek East Wetland and Highway 22X at the Bow River Ponds and Wetlands.
Most of the sites are large scale and integrate stormwater management and environmental habitat functions. The tour will be led by the City of Calgary and local consultants with particular expertise in new and innovative stormwater management and treatment measures. Participants on the tour will be transported from the hotel to each of the field sites, with a brief tour and discussion at each site. Safety equipment, other than safety boots, will be provided if required.
An Introduction to Canada’s Hydrometric Program – proposed Short Course:
Sit in for a morning briefing on Canada’s Hydrometric Program. Discussion themes include:
- Introduction to Canada’s National Hydrometric Program
- Cost Sharing – Data Sharing
- Data Collection
- Streamflow data production/analysis
- Review of metering and data acquisition options
Note that this short course is introductory in nature, and there is no field component to it. We suggest it would be most suitable for individuals who have little or no familiarity with Canada’s Hydrometric Program and the data and tools that are publicly available for their use (3 hours in duration).
