CANCID Annual Recognition and Awards for 2004

CANCID has a tradition since the mid 1980’s of recognizing those Canadians who make distinguished contributions to advancing irrigation and drainage for the improvement of water management in agriculture and better productivity and conservation of environmental quality of land and water in Canada and around the world.

In 2004, CANCID recognized seven outstanding persons. The awards were presented at the CWRA-CANCID annual meeting held in Montreal on June 16, 2004.
 

OUTSTANDING ACHIEVEMENT AWARDS

These three awards recognize individuals who have excelled in the fields of irrigation and drainage practices, land management and international development.  The 2004 award recipients were:

Wally Chin , Alberta Agriculture, Let bridge , Alberta

For distinguished service and outstanding contribution in promotion of environmental consideration to the practices of irrigation, drainage and salinity control of agriculture lands in Western Canada. Wally is a dedicated member of CANCID and carries on a variety of tasks in serving the members and advancing the goals and objectives of CANCID.

Dr. Caroline Begg, McGill University, Montreal, Quebec

For her exceptional contribution to research and development for sustainable land management and in preparation of new generations of young professional to be the stewards of land resources. Dr Begg is an exemplary educator, researcher and advocate of land resources conservation in Canada and overseas.

Dr. Robert Lagacé, Université Laval, St Foy, Québec

For his outstanding contribution to national and international development of subsurface drainage of agriculture lands through research, teaching and consulting at home and abroad. Dr Lagacé pioneered the application of science based- techniques for the implementation of large scale subsurface drainage program in Quebec and for the development of the widely-used and credited Subsurface Drainage standards for the Quebec.
 

LIFETIME ACHIEVMENT CERTIFICATE

The Lifetime Achievement Certicate is awarded to recognize individuals who singularly and collectively made a significant impact on the landscape of agriculture lands in Canada and around the globe through development, promotion of good practices, teaching, advising, and setting up of good standards and practices in subsurface drainage in temperate humid, arid, semiarid, and humid tropics of the world. This year candidates through their efforts have touched upon the life and career and practices of many Canadians and many more overseas and earned them a special place among many distinguished men and woman of this century.

Pierre Jutras - Secretary General Canadian Society of Agricultural Engineering

Pierre Jutras lead the development of the business side of the drainage industry in Quebec and Eastern Ontario for more than four decades. He contributed to the pioneering of government policy development, research, teaching and training of many professionals in Quebec. He lead an active consulting business that took him to many parts of the world advising, supporting and assisting with international development.

Gilbert Sylvestre: Ing. & Agronome

A pioneer of the drainage of agricultural lands in Quebec, his dedication led to the application of scientifically developed drainage applications and the codifying of them to policies, standards and practical engineering applications. He led several professional lives in research, teaching and farming with a great deal of excellence in performance and professional integrity. 

Dr. Robert S. Broughton: McGill University, Montreal, and Quebec.

For many generations, we grew up and used to call this great man simply: “Bob”. Bob has made great strides in the promotion of science-based methods for integrated water management for agriculture lands in eastern and western Canada, Europe, Asia, Africa, central America and the Caribbean. He left his mark own on people and landscapes in all parts of the world. Bob made us proud to be Canadians, and many of us proud to be his friends. Thousand of people attest to his quality as a human being of extraordinary qualities, as an uncontested leader and a pioneer with no competition


DISTINGUISHED PERSON OF THE YEAR AWARD

Dr. Chandra Madramootoo, Brace Water Resources Centre, McGill University, Montreal, Quebéc.

Many of  those practicing irrigation, drainage, and water resources management in Canada and around the world know Professor Madramootoo. He is recognized for his contribution extraordinaire and dedication in serving CANCID, ICID and CWRA at home and around the world. He is an excellent role model for the young and not so young in the dedication, professionalism and outstanding service, that is recognized all the time and everywhere with a great infusion of energy and a permanent smile. Professor Madramootoo is active in every part of the globe: in Europe, Central Asia, South Asia, Africa, the Caribbean, Central and South America and North America, beside his intensive involvement in Quebec, the rest of Canada and United States. He has represented Canada in many international fora and organizations with distinction, integrity and beyond the call of duty. CANCID and CWRA are proud to have him leading their efforts at home.
